Award winning Fylde Coast
Players are proud to present the most famous Lancashire Comedy
of them all – Harold Brighouse’s masterpiece ‘Hobson’s Choice’.
Written in 1916, such was the success of this play that its
title coined the famous phrase, when at the end of the play,
Hobson is left with no choice at all.
This exquisitely crafted
comedy is set in Salford in the 1880’s. The tight fisted
Victorian patriarch and boot seller Hobson, is incensed at the
“general increase in uppishness “ amongst his three grown up
daughters but is outwitted by the eldest, the clever Maggie. She
marries Hobson’s best boot –hand and sets up a business to rival
her father’s. The play is as ornamental as a pair of Jimmy Choos,
but much more durable, offering a fascinating historical mix of
northern grit, female emancipation and a touching belief in hard
work and the ideal of bettering yourself.
Maggie is a marvellous
creation, a powerful, feisty woman who wears the britches in
both the family and the boot making business. She makes men
tremble at the knees and none can gainsay her – as Willie Mossop
soon discovers when she announces “You’re going to wed me Will,
and when I make arrangements, my lad, they’re not made for
upsetting.”
Hobson’s Choice appeals to
all ages but may be of special interest to young people studying
English and Drama to GCSE level and is a set syllabus play.
But young or old if you want
an enjoyable evening at the theatre then you really have no
choice – only Hobson’s!
Hobson's Choice will be performed
on
19th October to 22nd October at Lowther Pavilion.
