04/11/09 Overlander presentation at Fleetwood Cricket Club

The battery is the most important bit of kit we modellers can buy.  It seems sensible therefore that we should be a little bit careful in our choice when it comes to buying these things. Whether you fly electric, I.C. or glider, if it’s radio controlled you know for an absolute   certainty that when your battery gives up the ghost, your precious model is usually lost forever. It was Andy who arranged this evening with Overlander when he met them at Woodvale.

Overlander market their own brand batteries and are conveniently located (for us) at Forton, near Lancaster. They kindly offered to give a talk to us about the latest battery technology.

Did this interest us - well the fact that over 100 members of various local clubs turned up, the answer was a resounding YES. Apart from our own members, other clubs who turned up were BAE Systems, Blackpool & Fylde, Chorley, Hale Hall, Pioneer and Preston Helicopters.

John who owns Overlander gave the talk.  He was happy to answer questions throughout the evening - to say that it was a good evening is an understatement. John gave a very straightforward presentation and showed his audience how they test their batteries.

John for Overlander in presentation

LiPos

They source their batteries from China.  John has vetted many factories bidding for the chance to manufacturer batteries for Overlander.

He brought with him a LiPo battery pack was supplied to him from one of these factories for appraisal.  This pack is clearly marked as a 30C.  When he plugged it into his testing machine, applied a 25C load it lasted around 30 seconds before the readout graph plunged into obscurity.  He also brought along a LiPo purchased on E Bay for £2.99.  It also failed spectacularly during the test. Overlander have found a really good manufacturer for their LiPos who manufacture the cells and connectors to Overlander’s high specification.  These battery packs are subjected to constant testing to ensure their standards are maintained.

He also advocated more use of what he called ‘lower number batteries’ because there is less internal resistance in a smaller mah battery. It is worth recording that in F5D Pylon racing the 1st 2nd 3rd places were achieved using Overlander Extreme LiPos. Overlander will always be pleased to advise you on the best battery choice for your model.

It is worth mentioning that  John asked us how many had experienced fire with their LiPo’s.  He said that the chemical fire which occurs with LiPo’s cannot be put out.  He also stated that the fumes produced are dangerous.

NiMh

John particularly recommends the use of the Sanyo Eneloop cells which have proved to perform incredibly well - he tested a set of these during his presentation.  They were loaded far higher than they could ever be subjected to in a model aircraft and apart from a small drop at the start of the test then continued to produce a straight line graph.  The Eneloop cells are claimed to maintain 85% of their charge over 12 months.  Overlander market transmitter packs using Eneloop cells for about £25.  This sounds like a very good investment.

LiFe Cells

This is the Lithium phosphate battery. These produce a nominal 3.30 volts per cell but charge to 3.60 volts.  John particularly recommends this type of battery for receiver power.  You do not need to use a voltage regulator (but you must ensure that the servos are capable of taking 6.6 volts).

These cells do not suffer from the same volatility as a LiPo.  They also charge in about a quarter of the time of that required for the LiPo.  They do not heat up during discharge.  They can also be charged over 1000 times.  They are however heavier than the LiPo.

Charger

Finally, Overlander have now developed a battery charger/discharger.  It  took them 2 years to develop this bit of kit.  It covers the charging of LiFe, NiMh, LiPo, Lion - everything that is currently available.  They are selling these for just £39.99.

Battery Disposal

John informed us that new legislation is being brought in next year which will require the exhausted battery to be returned to the battery supplier.  This does rather beg the question as to what you do if you are buying your batteries from Hong Kong on Ebay.

In Conclusion

After the presentation,we spoke to Tom Graham  who is part of the Overlander team.  Tom is a  freestyle competitor. When asked what the ideal power set up for an electric model would be.  He advised that they use two separate batteries in their models, one for the motor and separate one for the receiver (LiFe battery) - makes sense! He advised that Overlander’s top selling battery at the moment is the 2200 Sport 20C 3S  which they are selling for just £19.99.

Many thanks to the Overlander team for an excellent evening and to all our fellow members from the other clubs who travelled over to join us.

04/11/09 100 Years of Flying in the Fylde
We put on a static display again this year at the St Georges Hall.  It was again a very interesting show and we were again given pride of place at the end of the hall allowing us by far the largest display area.

Carl prepares his Albatross

This year we were represented by Carl who brought his lovely aerobatic ‘Miss America’ model.  This has retracts and he was able to display these to interested spectators.  He also brought his indoor E-E-flite Blade helicopter which he flew at frequent intervals.  He had lots of fun trying to land on Jim’s head. Jim brought his large ‘Lightening’ model and a Spitfire both of which attracted much deserved attention throughout the day.

Peter brought his PC9 Roulettes and the Fokker Tri plane built by Len.

George displayed his magnificent Fairy Swordfish, his Zulu, Tiger Moth and the Pinguin.  It was this latter model which attracted the attention of the press photographer.  A picture of George and the Pinguin duly appeared in the Lytham St Annes Express.

Also at the event was a 10th scale model of the AV Roe tri-plane (pictured right) The original was flown at Blackpool in October 1909 but due to bad weather only managed a hop, skip and a jump!

The show was run to raise money for the Air Ambulance and it was a pleasure to meet again Neil Airey, one of the Air Ambulance helicopter pilots.  He is a very interesting guy to talk to and has offered to give a talk at one of our forthcoming social evenings.

It was a really interesting show.

01/10/09 Not to be missed - Social evening October 20th

Don’t forget our first social evening is on Tuesday 20th October at Fleetwood Cricket Club at 7.30pm, when we have a talk from Overlander. Don’t forget there will be opportunity to purchase items on the night directly from Overlander. Several other flying clubs are attending, so it looks like it could be one of our best evenings ever. If you have problems parking on the night, there is an overflow car park on Fleetwood Road, the other side of the tram tracks that belongs to St George’s playing field.

01/10/09 Invitation to Blackpool Club's social evening

FCMFA members have been invited to Blackpool’s first social evening of the winter, Wednesday 7th October, 7.30pm at South Shore Tennis Club, Midgeland Road, Blackpool. Dave Swarbrick and Harold Dowbekin will be giving a presentation on their latest large scale gas turbine project, the Grumman F9F Panther. So if any member would like to attend, you will be most welcome.

Public Footpath Across our Runway Rejected.

We have received notification from Wyre Borough Council that the Inspectors final report is available for examination at www.wyrebc.gov.uk (click on 'A', locate Area Action Plan and read the seven downloads).

"Policy 5 amplifies and supports policy 4 as regards movement and Accessibility  within the AAP, particularly for pedestrians and cyclists. Its provisions are appropriate to the Area, although the Council has suggested changes improving clarity and coherence which I support to ensure effectiveness. Revisions to the multi user route are also proposed in order to reflect the latest scheme being implemented with the support of the public body REMADE. This revised route offers an attractive and convenient route away from vehicular traffic that does not conflict with the model flying club airfield and is capable of delivery. I therefore support this change."

In a different part of the report it states that the construction work of the multi user path will commence in 2010 and be expected to be completed in 2017, the multi user path is to follow the coastal route and will not now cross our airfield.

Just for your information, REMADE is REclamation and MAnagement of DErelict land (REMADE): REMADE has been set up by Lancashire County Council in partnership with the Northwest Regional Development Agency as part of the Agency’s commitment to tackling the region’s derelict land problem.

Our club's resistance to the proposal was worth while.

  25/09/09 Caught on camera
John P's Boomerang XL II was caught on camera at the flying site last week.

This really is a lovely model. 92" long with a 94" wingspan. Fibreglass fuselage, booms and a fair amount of carbon fibre to keep the weight down without compromising strength. The bare airframe weighs in at just around 17lbs with an all up weight of about 27 lbs.

John has fitted a neat powerbox system which distributes the power from two Lipo batteries.  Air down spring up Jet A1 retracts are fitted complete with brakes. All servos are JR as is John's transmitter.

The power comes from a Wren 2200 XL which seems to be more than enough, he can fly round comfortably on half throttle. In the air the model has a very gentle feel and tends to be smooth but you have to keep it moving however John can slow it up for a nice slow approach with flaps down and ailerons "crowed up" acting as air brakes.

Take a look at the video link on the gallery page.

  25/09/09 Test your geographic knowledge
Think you know where major cities in Europe are on the landmass, Maybe not. Grab coffee and go to Lufthansa's little test on the links page. You don't have to register. Try it for long enough and you should get full marks every time.........

20/09/09 IMPORTANT NOTICE - Site access closure

Jameson Road will be closed to vehicle traffic from the 27th to the 29th September 2009, between the hours of 5pm to 11pm for resurfacing work.

If you are at the field on these dates, don't get locked in, remember to leave earlier than 5pm.

If you see other members can you pass on this message to them.

01/09/09 Social evenings being planned for winter months
The committee have already been looking ahead to the winter period planning the monthly social evenings. Last winters meetings were well attended and there was an interesting talk or demonstration each month. The meetings are usually on the first Tuesday of the month however this clashes with the BMFA regional meeting and therefore the first social meeting will be on the 20th October. The date for Novembers meeting is yet to be confirmed.

Andy Monks has invited Overlander Batteries to the first meeting to give us a talk/demonstration. Overlander's fine reputation for quality battery assembly began over 30 years ago an they are now based fairly local to us in Forton. The range of cells and packs has continued to grow to meet the needs of UK modellers and in addition to batteries, Overlander's range now includes the finest accessories, motors, speed controllers, electric model planes and many other items.

This is without doubt an evening not to be missed. Details of the topics to be discussed will be available closer to the meeting.

  20/08/09 Dave Hartley's Fokker DR 1
Kevin Smith was around when Dave's Fokker DR1 took to the skies for the first time recently. Take a look at the Projects page and see how he went on.
25/04/09 New Model Show for the Fylde Coast

The North West Model and Hobby Show is taking place on the 16th and 17th May at Lowther Pavilion, Lytham. 10 to 5 on Saturday and 10 to 4 on Sunday

This is the first event for the show and the organisers promise over a dozen trade stands. The event has been organised by two local boating clubs however it covers all aspects of modelling.

If successful it will become an annual event so could be worth your support to get it off the ground.

29/03/09 Static display at Staining is cancelled
Blackpool vehicle Preservation Group have informed us that due to Health and Safety issues they have decided to cancel their event in Staining which was due to take place on the 24th May. FCMFA were providing a static event at the show.

17/01/09 Invitation from The Blackpool and Fylde R/C Model Society

The Blackpool and Fylde R/C Model Society have kindly invited FCMFA members to their evening meetings in February and March.

On 04/02/09 they will be hosting Andy Ellison ( the RCME columnist) as a guest speaker. He is an expert on the use of composite materials on models and is well known silent flight competitor.

On 04/03/09 Bob Blackburn will speak on his specialist subject which is micro miniature radio systems and indoor R/C - hopefully there will be demos.

Both meetings will be held at South Shore Tennis Club, Midgeland Road, Blackpool. Starting at 8pm.

  08/01/09 A message from Andy

The committee would like to wish everyone a  very Happy New Year and hope that 2009 is a good year for us all. If nothing else, 2009 has got to be a better year, weather wise, than the last two years, it can't be any worse, can it?

It was agreed at the clubs AGM on the 9th December 2008, that the FCMFA fees for 2009 would NOT be increased. They will remain the same as 2008, that is £50 for Seniors and £25 for Juniors, there is still a joining fee of £20. This is the second year in a row where membership fees have not been increased.

BMFA announced that their 2009 fees are also staying the same as 2008.  Their fees are:- Seniors £28, Family Leader £28, Family Partner £18, Junior £15 and Family Junior £11.

Social evenings have recommenced, the next one will be on Tuesday 3rd February 2009, at 7.30pm at Fleetwood Cricket Club. There will be a talk and demonstration in nylon covering and glass covering, everyone is welcome.

Thanks.

Andy.
